Serial port sharing

I have a small business client that has purchased a cash register with a barcode scanner. This cash register can also download information to quickbooks on the owners PC via a serial connection. Only problem is that the barcode scanner uses the one and only serial port on the cash register. Is there anyway to use this one and only serial port on the cash register for both the barcode scanner and PC interface at the same time? PC is running XP.
