Server Service will not run

Windows XP Pro Computer: Went to share a drive on this computer, recieved an error message that could not because the server service was not running. Tried to start server service, will not start, says a file is missing. Is this just a bad install, or did someone hack something in the registry to cause this problem?
Any feedback would be appreciated, don’t really want to redo this computer.
