Server solution?

I am in the process of planning to setup a computer system for a medium sized resturant. As a result, the owners would like to install a cost effective integrated cash registers, accounting and inventory system.
My question is,would I need to consider a solution based on a server based application system? The hardware? (cash registers,) and the accounting system software? If so, what is the most cost effective
