Setting up SFTP

We find it necessary to move from FTP to a more secure transfer with SSH protocol, I believe this would mean using SFTP. No one at our company has worked with this and we’d like to know where to start. Do we need software -server or client, can we use Windows server, is it costly, etc. Or is there some resource we can use that covers it all. thanks.
