Shared Internet Connection with Cable

I currently have a home network with windows me edition and we share a cable modem internet connection via a PCMCIA card. The connection drops out all the time and my wife is driving me up the wall to fix the problem. help !!!!! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
