I have a W2K box running as a fileserver on an XP Pro network. I’ve recently added a W98SE (DON’T ask ) laptop which will readily access the XP stations flawlessly. However, when attempting to access the W2K server, it asks for the default password (which I did NOT set). The resource is \\server\IP$ however, I have the drives on this box shared as their respective drive letters. No issue like this with XP. First, I installed IPX which is allowing 2-way communication between each stationand the server. On the 98SE laptop, I installed NETBeui (the ONLY way to get it to even see the network) then the same with the W2K box (the rest, remember, no problems) and while I can SEE the server on the network from the laptop, I get the password prompt window as described. I’ve checked my shares on the server and everything is as it should be. I have no problem accessing the XP stations as stated, and Internet access is also not a problem. I COULD push the files to the laptop as needed but I’d rather have the proper access.
This couldn’t be a difficult thing, surely it’s just something simple I’m missing. Your input will be greatly appreciated.
