Shortcuts not working

I have a PC running windows XP, when i turn this PC on and try and open a shortcut on my desktop it takes about 10 minutes until anything happens.
I have a word doc on my desktop and this opens straight away, I only have problems with shortcuts. I checked and they all point to the correct destination.
This is a home PC and isnt part of a network
