Shut down lock

Hello, After fitting an external USB hard drive i find that when i have accessed it everything works OK until i shut down the PC then windows hangs just before normal shutdown. I have no problem if i do not access the drive. i have also used safely remove hardware in task bar, but still it hangs at the end of shutdown.
