Simple web question

Hello, I have a pretty simple web question that I can’t seem to find any answers on. I was wondering if anyone had any information or a web site to view that explains the difference between www.yahoo.com and yahoo.com. I know it works for these sites but for some sites these links do not go to the same website. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
