Slave hard drive problems

I have installed (successfully) a new slave hard drive (160gb, 7200 rpm), which has no conflict. My aim was to store my video files on it (I do lots of editing which is pretty disk space greedy). I can copy files over onto the new drive, but when I go to play them back, they are very jumpy, and will not play them smoothly, if at all. Any ideas?
