SLI Video Cards

When you SLI video cards, do you make one as a primary, or is it possible that you use both video card’s ports. Say if two 8800 GT’s were SLI’ed together (2 DVI ports on each card) would I have 4 ports available to use in DVI or just two from one primary video card?
