Slow downloads in windows 2000 over 56k

Hi

I have just bought a new computer and installed windows 2000. I have a Hayes Accura 56K external modem model 5690.

There are no drivers availiable for 2000 for the modem so I have used the windows 95/98 drivers. I tried using the default drivers with windows 2000 but got no better response.

I can only get speeds of 2 KB/second when downloading files. Using my old PC running windows 95 with the same modem and line I got a lot faster speed.

Any ideas how I can achieve a better speed? What I need to do, or do I need to purchase a new modem which has windows 2000 drivers?
