Slow network connection

by blackcurrant . Updated 23 years, 2 months ago

Hi

I have a problem with my machine communicating with the network i.e. it is s-l-o-w. My machine is a Dell Dimension 2350 running XP (SP1), with 256MB RAM. The network card is a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC and came pre-installed.

Other machines on the network are not experiencing any problems communicating. The most noticeable effect is when Using Pegasus Mail. All mail is downloaded via my machine then pushed onto a server. When I close the New Mail window on my machine it takes approximately 1 second for each message to be transferred. When I perform the same action on another machine (Win98/2000), the process is almost instant regardless of how many messages need to be transferred.

I have looked at the NIC in Device Manager and there are no conflicts reported and the device is working properly.

Each computer connects to the network via a switch and patch panel using CAT5 cabling (recently installed and tested). The network does not have any remote connections.

Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this problem?
