slowdown in OS

Here’s the situation: Windows ME, Compaq machine, AMD Duron 750. Runs approximately 30-45 minutes and then slows down immensely. Have defragged and scan disk and no problems or errors found. Rebooting clears up speed problem for another 30-45 minutes and then slows down again. Any advice?
