Sony Vaio Boot Issues

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-717 running Windows 98 and I am having a boot up issue with this device. The device will boot correctly on the first attempt, but if a reboot is required it will take 4 attempts before it will boot sucessfully. This problem occurs with either battery power or wall current and I have not been able to determine the cause of this problem. Any solutions or advice will be greatly appreciated.
