Sound Card Problem (SB16)

Win98 os, SB16 Audio Device: Manuafacturer is C-Media Inc. (soundblaster) sound card. I am having problems with sound. The problem is when I boot to win98 no sound. At device manager an exclamation marker is there. If I remove and reboot PC sound works. Then next time I shut PC down and reboot there is no sound and I repeat the process. The driver has been updated without results. Can someone help.
