SOUND FROM CD ROM DRIVE

I am running win 2000 – I am not hearing any sound when I connect my earphone to the cd rom phone connector on the cd rom drive. I would appreciate if you could tell me how to correct or configure the system to work. I used different earphones with the same problem.
