Sound is too fast in all WMP content

I have a Compaq Deskpro EX that is playing all Windows Media content too fast (Radio, video, CD, you name it) people sound like they are on helium. Playing a CD through the Windows CD Player works fine so it seems like a problem with WMP. Running W2K sp3, 256mb ram. Tried both Windows Media Player 7.1 and 9.0. Tried two different Video cards and turned off hardware acceleration on both. This happens with all file types but is really driving me nuts with a training course.
