Hi
I have a machine running Windows XP SP1, with 128MB RAM, Celeron 2GHz, 17GB of 28GB hard drive space free. I regularly apply critical updates to this computer.
When I boot the machine the desktop appears after 1 minute. Next the startup programs load: Norton Antivirus 2002 Pro V8.07.17, Realpopup V2.4 (WinPopup substitute), and Wingate V.5. It takes two more minutes before I am able to launch a program. Is this normal?
The following services are disabled: Auto Updates, DHCP, Distributed link tracking client, fast user switching, firewall, remote desktop sharing, portable media serial number, remote registry, smart card and helper, telephony, themes, image acquisition, wireless zero configuration, human interface device access, indexing, routing and remote access, telnet, Windows audio.
When I am using the machine, it takes a ‘long time’ to open apps. This occurs all the time. The following are the main apps I use: Word and Excel 2000, Roxio CD Creator basic V.5.3.4.21, DesignCad Express V.12, Pegasus Mail V.4.02a.
Can anyone help me speed the machine up. I regularly defragment (once a month), and the virus definitions are up to date.
Cheers and digital beers…
