I’ve been working with a friend trying to resolve this for some time, but haven’t had much luck so far. For some strange reason around 7 minutes after powering up his Windows XP system it shuts down. The shutprocess is orderly. All the current applications close and the system powers down, just as if it had been commanded from the Start menu. I’ve installed all the recommended patches from Microsoft, and his system is more than adequate to run XP (P4/1.6 GHz, 500 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, etc). The spontaneous shutdown is repeatable, although after it happens a few times the system will continue to run normally until the next time it is shutdown for an extended period (hours). He’s not running any really exotic software, and we can’t trace the start of the problem back to the installation of any particular program. My next step is to start checking the hardware, but I’m concerned I’ve missed something obvious. Any suggestions on where to look next?
