SQL Question about RpcServerInqIf

Can anyone tell me IN PLAIN ENGLISH what the significance of RpcServerInqIf is. I got a SQL error that shut down alot of my dependant software. I originally got the error message “LogEvent: Failed to report the current event. Operating system error = 1717(The interface is unknown.). Error: 15457, Severity: 0, State: 1” I managed to track the error back to this RPC Proc, but no where in the MSDN can I find something that explains what this does and why it would bomb and take some of my applications with it. These processes and servers and databases have been running smoothly for months. Thanks
