SQL Server – Local/Remote

Is there any SQL Query by which the type of server can be determined? i.e., whether the server (and hence database) is on the local hard disk or on a network server? The computer name of the server is NOT the same as the SQL Server name (which is the default setting), so no use of comparing the names to see whether they match.
