start button hanging

I have a lat d 600. WheneverI bootup in normal mode, click on any item listed under the start button hourglass comes on and does not go away. I can click on any of my desktop items and they will open fine. I do not have this problem in safe mode. I unchecked all my startup items. Any one has any suggestion
