Strange error when I try to start my windows xp computer

I tried to boot up my PC earlier this evening, windows didn’t boot up. I only got a black screen and a strange error or message in the top left corner that looks like YoY only the ‘O’ has a line down the middle. Attempted then to boot from the dvd drive to recover windows and it won’t read from the disk. Is there any possible solution to this problem or am I, as they say, ‘boned’?
