Suspend To RAM Failure

I have a computer that has suspend to ram but no longer works. The computer just goes into standby mode with the power on and fans working. This feature is enabled in the BIOS and am wondering what happened to make this stop working as it should. Is it due to defective hardware; hard drive, memory, motherboard, or is it windows? Any thoughts on how to restore this feature?
