Swapping out a CD-ROM ?

I’m going to remove a CD-RW and replace it with a Windows 2000 compatible CD-ROM.
Steps:
1. remove CD-RW
2. startup and remove s.w. that is used to write with
2. go to h.w. devices and look for any drivers to remove if any
3. shutdown and restart
4. shutdown and install CD-ROM
5. restart and install drives and/or update any drives needed.
Any advice out there ? suggestions ?
