Switching from workgroup to domain

Many our users were originally installed to the default “workgroup”. We are now implementing Microsoft Exchange which requires domain login. We are having difficulty finding a clean strategy to convert users to the domain login while retaining their existing user profile. We can copy the profile, but the desktop display properties are not transferred and some applications (specifically Outlook 2000) will not run.
