synchronize BDC to PDC

What is purpose of synchronization? Does it happen automatically when a new server gets put on domain? I have not synchronized, yet in User manager I can see all users. Do I need to do a manual synchronization? I will be promoting this BDC to PDCas soon as I am done with setup and in return the PDC will then be a BDC. Any light you can shed would be fantastic. Thanks!
