System not recognising Network adapters

by jdclyde . Updated 21 years, 1 month ago

Working on an “e-machine” running Windows XP with SP2 installed. The system is a T2642.

The system does not recognise the network adapter. In the Device Manager it shows up as “Unknown” at the type of device and Realtech rtl8139/810x Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC with the yellow exclamation.

I loaded a current Antivirus (symantec corporate vr 10) and found many viruses and malware.

Removed the NIC and rebooted, finds the device, wants to reboot and then goes to the same thing.

It has an on-board NIC, but I have also tried two other Nic’s and get the exact same result.

I have also used different PCI slots as well.

same results.

Is this going to take a reinstall of XP? Will it let me “upgrade” or “repair” without losing current content? Not my system of I would have just done a clean wipe.

Thanks!
