I just reinstalled NT 4.0 Server on one of my company’s Dell PowerEdge 2400 servers. I initialized and recreated the containers for my RAID 5 array using the container configuration utility as part of the process to reestablish the server to its former operational state. Additionally, I reapplied SP6a and installed IE 5.5 w/SP2 and the latest cumulative security patch — both of which were present on the server prior to the crash that necessitated the reinstallation.
The original factory installation of NT 4.0 Server allowed me to select program icons [from the Desktop or from the Start Menu] and create a “one-click” quick-launch icon on the task bar located at the bottom of the Windows NT screen. Since reinstalling NT the task bar is inacessible and will not permit me to create quick-launch icons on it. When I right-click on the taskbar, I am only allowed to access the Task Manager or Taskbar Properties.
I view the loss of this capability as an inconvenience more than anything else. However, I want to be sure that this “little problem” is not an indication of more significant underlying problems with my NT installation.
My question is two-fold. First, is there a way to restore this capability through a registry edit or some other procedure that I can perform, short of reinstalling NT itself? Secondly, regardless of whether this capability is restorable, does its absence indicate some other existing/potential problems with my current setup?
