tcp\ip printing

I recently connected to a networked printer by adding a local printer and adding a tcp\ip port on a w2k pc. The printer I wanted to connect to had IP 10.0.0.20. The pc IP was 163.202.158.1 and both are on the same hub. I didn’t think I would be able to connect to this printer since they were on different subnets, but I connected and it prints fine. Can someone explain this to me?
