Testing Maxtor SATA HDD

by rickwakeham . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

Afternoon All…

I am hoping someone on here will be able to point me in the direction of a decent tool, or at the very least confirm my suspicions!

I (nearly) always build my own pc… However, I just bought a pre-build, and after 2 days it failed to boot, saying “I/O error”.
Then I couldn’t even see HDD in BIOS.
On reboot, HDD came back in BIOS, but windows wouldn’t load as boot sector was bad.

Cut a long story short, I have used the Maxtor (now Seagate) tools to analyse the disk. It picked up 99 errors very quickly, so I thought zero write whole disk, start again.

No joy, still cannot use disk.

I installed OS on a PATA drive, reconnected SATA drive, and windows can see it. However, it can’t format it either quick or slow.

I have been told by the vendor that if they test the drive and it isn’t faulty, they will charge me nearly ?50! Might as well buy a new drive!

Anyone suggest any tools that will confirm beyond doubt that the drive is dead? I don’t want to send it back until I am absolutely sure.

Mobo is ECS C51GM-M
AMD Dual Core 3600
2Gb DDR2

Many thanks for your help

Rick
