Ticking laptop. BIOS doesn’t recognize HD!

Hello. I have somebody’s Dell Inspiron laptop. It was making an odd ticking noise — it was definitely the hard drive. I took out the HD that was in there and put in a brand new Western Digital HD. I’m 100% positive it is compatible. Even with the new HD in, BIOS doesn’t recognize it, but the ticking noise stops. I have no clue what the problem is. In BIOS everything else is there except the hard disk. It says NONE. I can’t boot-up! HELP AHHH!
