TOSHIBA DVD/CD-ROM Problem

by frankwoda . Updated 22 years, 4 months ago

I have a problem with my DVD/CD-ROM Drive, which is TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2002 Drive.
I use a TOSHIBA SATELLITE PRO 4600 Notebook. The operating system is WINXP PRO.
When I start the computer with the drive door closed, there is a twofold knocking noise in the drive and the drive can’t read or write. By accident I discovered that when I leave the drive door open, before shutting down the computer, and then restart the computer with the drive open, I can use the drive for reading and writing CD ROMs. So I use the drive in this way. However I am interested to find out what is wrong with the drive that it can’t operate after starting the computer with the drive door closed.

Note: before discovering this curious behaviour I asked the question reporting the problem of double knocking noise at starting the computer and the inability of the drive to read or write. I was advised that the laser tracking mechanism was out of order and that I change the drive. However, as described above, I discovered later accidentally that I still can use the drive if I leave its door open at starting the computer.

What can be the problem and its solution?

An answer will be very much appreciated.
