Tracking e-mail clicks

Can anyone guide me how to know whether an e-mail sent by me to the end recepient has been read by him or not, keeping in mind that we should not ask the recpient for a receipt to our e-mail.

Platform used is : VB 6.0 and Ms-SQL Server
