TYAN Freezes After Installing Additional HDD

I have Tyan S2644n-4M and I tried to install a second drive on the same IDE cable. All went well, but after 10 – 15 min it starts to slow down and freezes. When I restart, it won’t see MBR, so I open the box reseat the cables and it will boot normally, after awhile it will do same thing. So finally I remove the new HDD put back the the pins to No Slave Present settings and it will boot and problem gone, but then new HDD not installed. So what is the best way to install 2nd HDD? How did you all do it? Do I need a IDE card? I don’t think I can connect my master to mainboard and the slave to PCI card, can I? Master drive WD 120gb , attemting to install drive, Maxtor Diamond 10 200gb.
