Unable to detect mouse after install

I’ve recently install Windows 2000 professional on a PC.The hard disk is brand new & formatted before installing the OS. The installation went smoothly until the computer restarted & booted into the OS. The desktop is okay but I realised that I couldn’t find my mouse pointer! I’ve checked that my mouse is working & that the mouse port is fine too!
I’ve try reinstalling but the same problem come back & I couldn’t use my mouse. I feel very handicapped without the mouse so anyone out there can help solve my big problem???
