Unable to run CHKDSK on NTFS

NT4 Workstation drive/partition 40+ GB: Receiving Event 7 error claiming a bad block. Unable to run CHKDSK on the partiton.

We get the very same msg explained in Microsoft’s KB Article Q196707.

1. How does one determine which version of NTFS a partition is using and

2. Is there any way around this?

We used Norton’s Disk Doctor from SystemWorks but it reports a clean disk w/ no errors. It doesn’t seem to really be doing a thorough check (finishes really fast). We have an Event 7 error which is reporting a bad block, and we are unable to complete a Speed Disk optimisation. We have Spinrite but it is WORTHLESS for NTFS partitions.
Can anyone help us with this?
