unplug device warning

c: has w98se Fat32
d: has w2k ntfs
Power scheme=Home/Office, Monitor off= 1hr, Hard disks off=2hrs, hibernate =never.
When using w2k then leaving >2hrs and returning, error message “device unplugged before stopping, data has been lost” see microsoft Q210913. Device listed is c:. Gives option of having unplug icon in tray but even when checked does not appear. When I use add/remove hardware wizard in control panel it shows no devices. How do I fix this ?
