Unsuppported CD-RW problem

I have Win 98, Adaptec CD s/w, Yamaha CD, 8424. The problem I have is that the CD is recognised as a regular drive, but not a burning drive. I have downloaded and uopdated the new firmware, and a new version of adaptec. HELP!
