Up grading to P4 in windows 2000

I have upgraded mother boards that had windows 98 on them with out reinstalling windows 98, it just goes through and finds all of the drivers loads just fine. When I try to do this in windows 2000 I get a blue screen before it loads completely. Isther a way to do this from a system which has a P3 1000 to a P4 2.53
