Ok, here’s the plan. I have 1 old hardware NT 4.0 PDC (SRV1) that I am replacing with a new box and installing W2K Adv. Server on. My plan is to run DCpromo on an Adv. Server that we currently have (SRV2) and demote our PDC (SRV1)to a BDC. Bring up the new machine(SRV3) as a Member Server, reconstruct the directory structures while the old(SRV1) and the new(SRV3) are running on the network. Then, remove the old PDC(SRV1) from the network. Rename the new machine (SRV3) to the same name thatthe original PDC had (SRV1). Then run DCPromo on the new machine. (Now called SRV1)
Correct me if I am wrong, but I can preserve the domain user information by upgrading the existing W2K (SRV2) to a DC, correct?
Seems to be the easiest way to do it. But, will the existing PDC (SRV1) allow itself to be demoted in favor of a W2K DC? Microsoft leads one to beleive so in suggesting that PDCs are upgraded first. That would leave the rest of the NT domain controllers as BDCs, right?
