Upgrading WIN Me to WIN 2000Professional

i have a newish toshiba laptop , i need help it is pre installed with Windows Me , which has caused so much pain , Microsoft say yes it is possible to upgrade , not loosing data , and other microsoft staff say that isnt possible ? i need some help knowing how to upgrade my system. (is it as easy sticking in the upgrade c.d.?)
