Upgrading WinME to WinXP

I’m thinking of upgrading my system from Windows ME into Windows XP. Is it possible to install the new WinXP by myself? If so, what are the right things that I should do. For further information, I’m using a Compaq PC, model Presario 5000 which is powered by Intel Processor III, 1 G.H.
