USB Hard Drive not recognized, cannot format

by chester . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

Hi All

I’m at my wits end, hope you guys can help out.

I have a Western Digital MyBook 500GB external USB hard drive. It was already pre-formatted and I mapped it to my F Drive.

Sometime back, the drive registered an I/O error. I’ve checked all cables, USB ports, etc… – I have another Maxtor external USB drive and I swopped cables everything…

With the I/O error, I tried to then go into MSDOS and format F drive (since my drive was mapped to F). It was working, up to 10% but then the power went out and the format was stopped before it completed.

Now I try and connect the hard drive (it makes some noise) but I can’t see it on any My Computer, not in Disk Manager, I downloaded Partition Magic 8.0 (can’t see) and when i go to MS DOS, i can’t even see the F drive anymore – wheras before I could.

At this point, I’ve totally given up recovering the data – I just want to re-format it, but by all accounts I can’t even see/find it. And I have tried plugging it into another PC, can’t work also

Thanks a lot

Chester
