usb network

I have connected my XP to MY 98[2] via a usb cable for file transfer.
I cant get the usb connection to be seen via direct cable. IN 98,It sees only lpt1 and com1.
in add hardware if finds nothing.
In XP it finds new hardware, but fails to installbecause there is no software.
I tried adding it as an adapter in Networks.
But usb doesnt show up.
Is it possible to set up a direct connection through a usb cable.
I need to do this today, so it looks like I am going to have to use a data cable…yuk!
