USB port problem

I tried to connect an Alaska USB storage (128Mb) device to a DELL PC PIII with Windos XP an when it detects the new hardware the computer turns off, the USB port seems to be ok because if I connect a USB mouse it works perfect.
The storage device has support for both USB versions 1.1 and 2.0

Could you please help me to solve this?
