USB/Printer Problem

I have an HP All-in-One printer. It is installed but the computer does not recognize that it is plugged in. It has worked in the past but somehow got uninstalled. Now, when I go through the installation process, it tells me to plug in the printer into the USB port. I do and it does not realize I’ve done anything. My USB external drive works fine so I know it is not the USB port. Anyone have help?
