user has multiple Profile directories

I?m seeing a problem on Windows NT 4.0 machines where a user has multiple Profile directories. My profile is under NBKKI92, NBKKI92.000, NBKKI92.0001. When looking at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\ProfileList, I see incorrect SIDs are being assigned to NBKKI92 and NBKKI92.0000. The correct SID is assigned to NBKKI92.0001, the last one created. It appears that something is renaming the SID.

There is no clear corruption to the actual local profile. I can rename any ofthe prior profiles and they work just fine. The only apparent problem is that the User?s SID is being renamed, causing a Default Profile to be created upon next login.

Have you seen or heard of this problem?
