user profile.bak?

End-User missing desktop app shortcuts upon login. \%systemroot%\profiles directory now contains a user username.bak account. Why would the profile backup be created and what is the best course of action. Obviously I can remap nw drives, apps, etc but I’d really like to know why this occurs in NT.
